CHAPTER ONE
“ome on, can’t you ride faster than that?” a tall well built boy called
over his shoulder, as he than turned his attention back to the crowded street
before him and commanded his grayish white mare to a stop.
Briana-Kali soon rode up and stopped next to him on her golden brown
steed, “If I weren’t more concerned with the people on the street, you would have
a race for your wages, Aylmer.” She said as she looked around the street and
adjusted her hat to make sure her bright red and white hair was not exposed.
She didn’t really know why she had bothered with the hat. Her eyes gave her
identity away. Except for herself not many people in her island home had eyes
that were brighter than fire itself. She looked out the side of her eyes for a
moment. Her pointed ears perked up from their usual folded state. Sometimes
her keen elfin hearing actually came in handy.
Aylmer had sensed that something was bothering Briana-Kali. “What’s
wrong?” He didn’t like it when her ears perked up like they just did. Usually it
meant she had formed some joke or attack for her sister. And that usually meant
he had a role in it. But now, it just meant something was wrong. Something he
couldn’t hear.
Then from a little way down the street the two heard a woman screaming
for help. Briana-Kali and Alymer look at each other, each knowing what the
other was thinking, and gave their mounts two light hits in the stomach area with
their heels for a signal to go.
The two followed the ear splitting cries through the twisting streets until
they saw the source of the cry. It was a young girl no more older than
Briana-Kali, being assaulted by two men, who looked like tourists in the middle of
the road.
“Say it again, wrench!”, a slightly plump man with dark blond hair
screamed at the terrified girl, who was being held by the other man.
The girl was leaning over as far as she could. Her long black hair covered
almost all of her face while small droplets of blood fell onto the cobblestone
street. She tried to talk but only a barely audible whimper came from her
quivering lips. The man holding her, jerked her head up by pulling at her dark
hair, exposing her goldenrod toned neck. He looked the girl up and down and
than said to his partner, “Hey, Derek! Since she won’t say noth’in, she won’t
mind if we have a little fun with her.”
Derek walked toward the girl and placed his hand in between her legs and
felt her body tense with fear. He looked at her face and said, “You’ re right
Wayne. I believe she has something for us,” as he started to lean toward the
terrified girl.
Briana-Kali handed her reigns to Aylmer and dismounted her horse. She
walked to where the men and the girl was as she said, “Why don’t you
leave her alone?” She paused for a moment while the two foreigners turned to
look at her, “I’m sure she has better things to do.”
Derek kept his gaze on Briana-Kali and asked with a smirk on his face,
“Oh, really? And what do you think of me little lady?”
“Frankly, the horse is prettier.” Briana-Kali replied, her voice never strayed
from it’s confident tone. “Now, let her go!” She ordered.
“That so?!” Derek said as he balled his hand into a fist and swung at
Briana-Kali.
Briana-Kali easily avoided the punch by stepping aside. She watched as
the American went sprawling on the ground. As Derek tried to compose himself,
Briana-Kali walked calmly over to where he was, and broke his nose when she
kicked him in the face.
Derek’s companion threw the girl aside and lunged at Briana-Kali. She
once again stepped to the side, only this time, as he almost flew past her, she
extended her arm and clotheslined him, as some people have termed. He, too,
was laying on the ground, holding his neck. He than managed to ask, “Who are
you anyway?”
Briana-Kali removed her hat and let her long tell tale hair fall to it’s natural
length, “I am Briana-Kali. Sister to Queen Lynne and Princess of this land.” She
answered using her regal voice to intimidate him.
Wayne still looked at Briana-Kali and asked slightly concerned about the
fate, he and his friend might receive for their attack on the princess, “What are
you gonna do to us?”
Briana-Kali looked at the bloody girl still lying on the ground and then she
looked at the two attackers. “Well, American, if it were any minor crime, you and
your buddy would be banned from this country for the rest of your natural days,”
she answered, “but since you not only attacked me, but you attacked the girl,
sexually and physically, you two shall be taken to the local jail to await trial and
sentencing to the fullest extent of Draellmenese law.”
By this time Alymer, who had disappeared, returned with several green
dragons. As they took the two Americans into custody, Briana-Kali turned to the
assaulted girl and helped her to her feet.
“Thank you, Princess!” The girl softly said. “I owe you my life.”
Briana-Kali summoned Patia, a new green dragon over to her as she
patiently said, “Hush, now! You owe me nothing.” She than said to Patia, “Make
sure she gets home safely and that she is well tended to. If anyone opposes
you, send them to me at the Dragon Castle.” Patia nodded as she took the girl
in her care.
After all was settled Briana-Kali took her horses reins from Alymer and
remounted. “Let’s head back to the castle,” she said simply.
